BUCKNER, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas teenager was killed and another was injured when their homemade sparkler bomb exploded before they could back away safely, authorities said Thursday.

The teens, who were celebrating the Fourth of July, used electrical tape to bind sparklers together and lit another sparkler to act as a fuse. The bundle detonated sooner than expected as one of the teens was placing a 5-gallon bucket over it, said Pete Richardson, Lafayette County's chief sheriff's deputy.

Wrapping together sparklers "makes a pretty awesome bomb," Richardson said.

Both teens were taken to the hospital, where 17-year-old Justin Smith, of Buckner, died. Authorities didn't release the injured teen's name, but said he is in stable condition and from nearby Mount Holly.

Two other people witnessed the blast but were not injured.

Lafayette County is under a burn ban, which means fireworks are illegal unless a resident receives written permission to ignite them. Richardson said he didn't know if the teens had permission to use fireworks.

My sympathy goes out to the family that lost a child. However; I started playing with fireworks at around 10 years old, we could buy them year round in a small store in Star City ( lived there for a year while Dad was in Korea, then we moved to north central IL when he came home ). Anyway, I thank God he gave me the smarts to know what to do with fireworks, and what not to do with them! LiloH; you can have the booze, don't use it anymore, you can have the smokes, don't need them anymore; but you, Osama Obama and the rest of the Welfare Party, cannot have my guns; my ancestors fought for our Independence from the Crown, and gave me a document called the Bill of Rights ( ever heard of it? ), which gives me the right to bear arms. Me, and a 100,000,000 other Americans will not give up that right either, period! Me and my 20 million veteran brothers will not allow it, along with the rest that legally own guns. We outnumber the combined forces of the military, law enforcement, and anyone else that would try such a stupid stunt as taking away our guns. I almost forgot; the UN doesn't have any say in it either; they can go to blazes; this is the United States of America, and we govern ourselves, we THE PEOPLE, will not be governed by the UN!

A roman candle has about 200-300 grains of black powder or pyrotechnic explosive equivalent in each one, when you use a modern day muzzle loader weapon you use between 80-120 grains to hunt animals as large as deer, so imagine 4-6 roman candles each containing 200-300 grains each and it takes 7,000 grains to make a pound X 4-6 you have almost1/4 pound of high explosives in your hand or a pipe bomb capable of blowing up a humve or even a small tank..

I think what they are trying to describe as sparklers are actually roman candles...

This is really sad and I feel for the family. Kids let this be a lesson that anything dealing with fire is NOT a toy.

Some of you people are just stuck on stupid and passed out on dumb.. Some want to critize the state and say we need to ban fireworks?? Why the hell are you still here then?? To the others who think their opinions really matter as to what happened.. YES sparklers can EXPLODE especially when you tape 300 of them TOGETHER.. sparklers are essentially GUN POWDER and when you take such a mass amount at once then YEAH your gonna blow something up and kill yourself.. **SMH** NO ONE knows what they were thinking or why they did it.. ALL we do know is that it was a tragic accident that couldve been PREVENTED **IF** they wouldve just followed the BURN BAN ... Im sorry for the families who are affected by this horrific accident and my thoughts and prayers go out to them for their loss.. BUT at the same time- WTF were they thinking when they decided to make a homemade bomb?? That it was going to explode with Candy & Rainbows??

Wow, everyone on here is so quick to judge. You should really learn proper grammar and how to spell before you call other people stupid and as far as banning fireworks goes; if we are going to start that then we might as well ban all sales of guns, alcohol, and tobacco.

I say ban all fireworks. Most in this state to stupid to own them. No wonder this state is rated on the lowest end of all polls.

They can explode if all of the powder is set off at the same time. Depending on how they were bound together. Seems to me if there is still a statewide burn ban then there should be a statewide ban on selling fireworks. But you still see stands and tents set up. Law enforcement agencies will ticket you for contraban if they pull you over for any reason and find fireworks. BAN THEM ALL TOGETHER THE THE RISK IS CUT DOWN. Sure they can cross over into another state. Let them make the drive. Then if they are caught lock them up. If they are minors, lock them up alongside the parents or guardian and fine them.

Sparklers do not explode prematurely or otherwise! They are not explosive. What really happened? Saddened about the death and injury of the teens.
