LITTLE ROCK, AR - An atheist group is taking Central Arkansas Transit Authority to federal court saying the bus system and its advertising agency On The Move Advertisement are denying their free speech rights by rejecting a proposed advertisement. CATA says United Coalition of Reason is out for publicity.

The ads were to launch the new Central Arkansas Coalition of Reason (Central Arkansas CoR), a collection of ten area atheist and agnostic groups. The ads would have directed people to the www.CentralArkansasCoR.org, inviting them to consider joining any of the groups in the coalition. But after negotiations with CATA broke down in March, UnitedCoR decided to sue.

United Coalition of Reason says it wanted their ad to run on buses going to and from Riverfest last weekend. It didn't happen. And they say that's because CAT singled them out.

The ad reads "Are you good without god? Millions are."

But the Coalition of Reason says it isn't good with the publicly funded Central Arkansas Transit Authority refusing to run the ad without special requirements. So the group is taking CAT to federal court.

"It’s really unfortunate because we have very little tax money to go around as it is,” LeeWood Thomas says. “The last thing I want to do is spend more of it on what should be plain as anybody should see, come on, its free speech."

The lawsuit claims cat required the atheist group to spend more than $30,000 in insurance because of fears the ad could lead to vandalism.

But Thomas says the group has had no problem with its winter solstice display on the capital grounds or the "adopt a highway" sign on La Harpe in downtown Little Rock.

"We've not seen any vandalism,” Thomas says. “There's no reason to believe the bus ads would be vandalized either."

COR says it is not asking for anything unprecedented, citing faith based advertisements already on the side of Central Arkansas Transit buses"

CAT isn't talking about the case on-camera Wednesday but its riders are.

"Its up to the provider,” rider Don Jackson says. “CAT has a right to express who gets to advertise on their buses since they go everywhere."

"That would be fine with me, it wouldn't be a big deal,” rider Ron Flakes says. “If the taxpayer is paying for it, you got to go with it."

But right now the "good without god" ad isn't going anywhere.

Lawyers for CAT say they approved the advertisement artwork in March and that the problem now is between the atheist group and the transportation providers ad agency "On The Move", which is a for-profit venture.

Attorney Jess Wweere adding that allegations that CAT conspired to censor any group is false and that the atheist group's main objective is publicity.

Like I said mountain out of a mole hill. We all have the freedom to express our views at this time. Maybe the contract for the signs was cheaper when they put them up. I mean look at the gas prices. They have to cover it somehow. I have called no one a name nor expressed such extreme for another's belief. Seems like the atheists on here are really riled up for some reason. The names you have called my beliefs are what is getting disgusting. I did not do that to your's. A FOLLOWER OF THE LIVING JESUS CHRIST.

@ True Believer--YOU have ABSOLUTELY NO scientific proof for any sort of god, so stop pretending. LOL! If there WERE ANY such evidence then we'd ALL know about it and there wouldn't BE any Atheists. I have, however, a complete history of YOUR faith. I.E. FACTS, documentations, origins, and most importantly YOUR bible. The bible is one of the MOST potent and concrete arguments FOR Atheism EVER conceived. See, I'VE read it in it's entirety, I'VE taken the painstaking time to find out everything about your faith. I'm certain I know more about both than you because if you knew what I knew, you wouldn't be some sort of "true believer". "What's so vile about the Christian billboards?" I'll tell you what's so vile. The spreading of ignorance and the fact you glorify and OBSESS over a single crucifixion is disgusting to me. Just as disgusting as the whole Muhammad and Moses based faiths as well. It's ALL garbage built on ignorance and fear. To me, that's horribly disgusting and vile. Even more so because people actually believe that archaic nonsense. You say you have faith? So do THOUSANDS of other delusional people except they're called "schizophrenics", "crazies", "people with mental disorders" and they're in institutions taking medicine for those shortcomings. They have faith in several different things, I.E. IMAGINARY friends, IMAGINARY conspiracy theories, IMAGINARY inflictions, and the list goes on and on. Faith doesn't make those things true ANY more than YOUR faith makes YOUR delusion true. See, believing in the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus as a child with ALL OF YOUR HEART didn't make them true so believing in "God" or the resurrected Zombie Jesus doesn't make those true either. God is just an imaginary friend for grownups who aren't ready for the real world. If you opened your eyes and did just a LITTLE BIT of UNBIASED research, you'd know this. Sadly, most likely you won't though. Religion loves it's blind sheep and has got YOU trained to NOT ask questions.

This is a mountain from a molehill. Thou dost protest too much. The separation of church and state was merely the gov't couldn't tell you what religion or not you had to be. But they told N.A. and Africans what they had to be. They were escaping the grip of the Catholic and the Church of England's grip on their life.

Billboards are in a different department. Its not hung on a side of a bus. I dont believe religion messages or athiest messages should be on a side of a bus. transportation should only advertise products, and not athiest vs religion.

TruthHurts i understand what your saying, but you not understanding what i am saying. I said that no religion ads should be done. No religion and no ads from atheist. All it does is make people fight more..... And besides it would be a shame to see religion and atheist fighting using ads in ads while a person is sitting on a hot bus. I rather see a movie ad or a music ad than seeing religion ads vs atheist ads while riding down the road.

But there are ads and billboards about christian beliefs. Believing that something shouldn't be there will never change that. The United Coalition of Reason should have the same rights as anyone else. Btw, the busses were made to have ads...and there have been several messages about your god before. So like I said before, it is nonsense for CATA to try to charge more. The word god may be on money...but the constitution doesn't. ;-)

anyways, i believe that advertisement companies that deal with transpertation needs to just worry about showing ads that have NOTHING to do with religion or about god. There should be no ads about exepting him and no should be no ads about being without him. Thats what tv and radio and internet is for, it should not be on public transportation systems like buses and so forth.
