LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Gov. Mike Beebe wants to weigh in formally on a court decision that lets school districts keep excess property tax revenue if they raise more money than that set under Arkansas' funding formula.
Beebe asked the Arkansas Supreme Court on Monday to let him file a "friend of the court" brief. Justices last month said Eureka Springs and Fountain Lake could keep an extra $2.2 million. The governor and others say the decision threatens a funding imbalance across the state's 239 districts.
Attorney General Dustin McDaniel asked the court to reconsider its decision. He fears funding gaps like one that led to a court challenge two decades ago.
This year, six districts collected property taxes beyond the set standard.
A decision is expected in 2013. Arkansas has 469,000 school children.
