Benton Man Evicted After Mother's Death

A church evicts a Benton man from his home after his mother's death.
BENTON, AR -- William Burnett has nowhere to go with no time to figure it out.

"I'm angry and I'm hurt," Burnett said. "He told me he's sorry and that I had 10 days to get out."

Burnett says he's lived in his house in Benton with his mother for most of his life, forced to provide 24 hour/day care for her until the day (8/13) she died.

Seven days later Burnett and his fiancé were given an eviction notice that they had 10 day to get everything out and go.

The Benton Foursquare Church two doors down owns the home and the property. They had an agreement with Burnett's mother for her to live there free of charge, but since she's no longer with us they want Burnett and his fiancé gone.

"This isn't right," said Joann Weaver, Burnett's fiancé. "It's not morally right. It's not ethically right."

Property management however says they do have the right.

"And to be honest with you, they're squatters," David Brewer remarked.

Brewer is the property manager. He's also the son of the pastor of the church and says Burnett and his fiancé destroyed the home and have had the cops called on multiple occasions since Burnett's mother's death.

"The last thing I want to do is see something being blemished toward the church by the cops being at the house every other night," Brewer said.

The church says they had prior plans to make more space anyways.

"That house will be gone," Brewer added. "The only reason the church bought it was to make a parking lot out of it."

Burnett says they don't want to be here forever. They just want more than two weeks following his mother's death.

"I'm having a hard time believing that this house of God down here," he said.  "These people that are supposed to believe in the same God I believe in don't care if I have anywhere to go or not."

They say they would expect to be given the usual month common with eviction notices.

Burnett and his fiancé expect that they'll ultimately leave or be forced away by Tuesday (9/3) the end of the holiday weekend.
