Catholic High plans to expand athletic field

Catholic High School's plan to expand their athletic field has neighbors concerned the new sports complex would spill over into the buffer zone and onto homeowner’s backyards.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - Catholic High School's plan to expand their athletic field has neighbors concerned the new sports complex would spill over into the buffer zone and onto homeowner’s backyards.

People who live on Ridgecrest Drive say, the school and the architect have promise to do right by them.

Both sides turned out to the Little Rock Planning Commission meeting Thursday night to present their cases. Dana Carney with the Little Rock Planning Commission says there are two areas of concern. "The proposed new driveway comes close to the rear property line, and then where grading would take place to contour the property and vegetation would be planted are the two areas of primary concern."

The current project intrudes into the buffer zone, but the Catholic High School principal says the architect is redesigning it.

Carney says the new plans will address the type if vegetation buffer used and the distance of the sports complex to homes. "I think we're going to be looking at specifics as to what's going to be planted there, not just distance, but the quality of the buffer that's going to be proposed."

Monica Issitt says her fears will diminish as long as the new plan doesn't wipe out the woods beyond her backyard. "The property line is a fence that actually marks the division between our property and Catholic High, so everything behind the fence belongs to them. I'd rather it stay like this than have new landscaping put in, but I think Catholic High is doing everything possibly to help us."

The principal at Catholic High School says he's willing to make changes the neighbors can be happy with, but is not willing to discuss the new designs for the athletic project until he's had a chance to talk to the neighbors on Ridgecrest Drive.

Carney says, "Hopefully those changes will be met positively by everyone and will address those concerns the neighbors have and I'm sure we will move forward."

Catholic High School plans to hold a community meeting with the neighbors in the next few weeks to go over the new designs for the athletic field. The project goes back to the Little Rock Planning Commission April 26th.
