SEARCY, Ark. (AP) — Officials in Searcy say 90 people will be out of work when a gas-drilling company closes its doors.

Searcy Regional Chamber of Commerce President Buck Layne says Weatherford International will shut down by Sept. 8. The company uses hydraulic fracturing — also known as fracking — to drill for natural gas.

Layne tells The Daily Citizen it's possible that other companies will pull out from the area to focus on oil-rich regions because of low wholesale prices for natural gas.

Hydraulic fracturing is a method used to extract oil and gas from rock by injecting high-pressure mixtures of water, sand or gravel and chemicals.

Yes, it was an intelligent idea. But Its Just Me is right; the oil companies have Congress on a leash.

I think a lot of that so-called stimulus money should have been spent building a natural gas distribution system (infrastructure) so we can put more NG-powered cars and trucks on the road. THAT would have created jobs, helped clean exhaust fumes, lowered pump prices (NG runs about $1.50/gal equivalent) and helped us import less oil through reduced demand. but NOPE - didn't build that.

We all love the mild winters, but it has caused an over stock of natural gas. Even the people who own mineral rights are feeling the change in prices and amount of gas being pumped. Never a happy medium for the working class.
