LAKE VILLAGE, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas State Police and the Chicot County Sheriff's office are investigating the beating death of the Chicot County tax collector.

Sheriff Ronald Nichols says the brother of 72-year-old Nell Johnson found her inside her home in Lake Village Thursday afternoon after her co-workers asked him to go check on her when she didn't show up for work.

Nichols says it appears intruders got into the home and hit her in the head. He says since he and Johnson were fellow elected county officials, he asked the state police's criminal division to take the lead in the investigation.

Nichols said Johnson had been tax collector for about six years, but he's known for more than two decades.

He says no suspects have been identified in the case.
