Chief: Jonesboro officer justified in shooting

Jonesboro's police chief says an officer was justified in the fatal shooting of a suspect who attacked him.

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — Jonesboro's police chief says an officer was justified in the fatal shooting of a suspect who attacked him.

Chief Mike Yates told The Jonesboro Sun on Thursday that Officer Nick. R. Holley was in fear of his life when he shot 57-year-old Cletis Williams on Monday.

Yates says Holley was serving misdemeanor warrants on Williams when Williams became violent. Williams took away Holley's Taser and shocked the officer twice.

Holley drew his pistol and shot Williams once, but Yates says Williams kept fighting. Holley fired several more times. Williams was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Yates says Holley suffered minor injuries and will soon return to light duty.

A prosecutor will review the investigative file to determine whether any charges are warranted.
