LITTLE ROCK, AR-- Congressman Tim Griffin responds to a recent Fox 16 News report uncovering problems with the federal Lifeline program.

The $1.3 billion service allows those in need to get a free phone, but they have to show proof of need in order to qualify.

Some people in Benton say they are getting free phones without having to show proof of need.

"This is the type of waste and abuse of the lifeline cell phone program that we have seen all over the country," said Griffin.

Griffin says the problem is a nationwide issue. So he has produced videos and sponsored a bill to get rid of the cell phone component.

Right now, he is still gathering co-sponsors.

"This is another example of something we have to tackle," said Griffin.

The Lifeline program is paid for through the Universal Service Fund, which consumers pay for every month on their cell phone bills.

The Federal Communications Commission says it has adopted comprehensive reform projected to save $2 billion over three years.

The agency also tells us it is not going to allow a few bad actors destroy a program designed for low income Americans.

I'm absolutely furious. I'm goingto call AT&T and demand theystop charging me the fee or I'm going to cance my family's $340/mo.plan. I'd rather have no phones at all than give to that worthles scam. Looks like its almost 1984,ey Big Brother?

wp; I know what you mean. I've never understood cowing down to the Hispanic community by putting signs in Spanish up in government offices, and elsewhere now. On a t-shirt website I heard some local DJ's talking about, saw a shirt that said - For English, press 1; Para Espanol, move back to Mexico and press 2. Wish I could afford the shirt!

The govt. is not giving any incentive for these bums to get a job. Why would they want to when they are getting everything paid for by the hard working tax payers? Pop them off of the govt. boob and make them get a job to survive. Stop the welfare.

If they are "life-line" cell phones then why are they able to dial numbers other than 911? I don't mind helping the elderly or truly disabled but anyone else needs to get off of their sorry butts and find a job. And I see them advertise tax paid cell phones at convenience stores, not to mention that it's also advertised in spanish, just disgusting! The only time any kind of welfare should be announced is at the welfare office, and in ENGLISH only but that's another topic. I'm sick of paying for loser's $800+ a month apartment in W.Little Rock, sick of paying for their utilities, their xanax and valum, their steaks, lobster and RedBull etc....Welfare has become a way of life for many b/c they have everything they need and don't need to lift a finger to get it...Grrrrrr, I think my head may explode on this one, just maddening!

I think he is pissing in the wind. I wish him the best of luck tho. Last time I checked, having a cell phone is considered a priviledge and luxury, not a necessary item. Why dont they call it what it is..... welfare.

Hey congressman griffin, us taxpayers are looking for action not just words. These free Obama cell phones are a major part of his GOTV (Get Out The Vote) program. Let's get these things turned off as soon as possible. Besides it seems like the only people that these free Obama cell phone users are calling is their drug dealers. Turn over their phone records to the DEA and let the DEA get rid of the drug problem in america.

No more free rides. Get the people off the old gas maker and see that the ones getting them meet requirements. We should help the needy not the lazy.
