HOT SPRINGS, AR -- A week after the primary election in Garland County, they are counting the votes again!
Thomas Hickox and Ronald Dunn Sr. are facing off to be come the GOP nominee for Garland County Sheriff. After recounting 2,379 ballots, today Dunn emerged as the winner -- by only eight votes.
"It was so close that I believe that if I had been in his shoes, I'd ask for a recount, too," Dunn told me by phone.
Last Tuesday night , commissioners declared dunn's opponent Hickox the winner by eight votes, but a poll worker admitted to forgetting to count a ballot box. The next day, they counted the forgotten ballot box and that count put Dunn in the lead by six.
Dunn picked up two more votes in today's count.
"That person reprimanded themselves enough. They were very upset when they found out their error," said Ginna Watson, Garland County's election commissioner.
Hickox is now accepting his defeat and he's not blaming election workers.
"They're a great group of people and I can see that dot every 'i' and cross every 't.' They did everything they could," Hickox told me.
Now the primary election is officially over, one to be remembered as close and hectic.
