England Middle School Closing

In Lonoke County, when the doors close for summer at England Middle School, they will never open again.
In Lonoke County, when the doors close for summer at England Middle School, they will never open again. The number of students is down, which means the money coming in is also down.

“We had a lot of memories in the middle school," said Kayla Moore.

Mary Moore's daughter Kayla is going to high school two years early because England Middle School is closing. “I'm afraid of someone hurting her and her not getting the individual attention like here."

Next year, 7th graders like Kayla and the 8th graders will have their own wing at England High School; 6th graders will go to the elementary school.

"In my opinion, they are too little, too young, to be with big senior high kids. I wish we could keep the middle school open," said Mary Moore.

So would Superintendent Paula Henderson. "It'll be a sad day. There will be tears and tissues."

Middle school students have been in this building for the past eight years, but come Friday the lights will go out for the last time.

"Declining enrollment which equates to declining dollars has contributed. In the Delta, we’ve lost so many students," said Henderson.

Over the last 10 years, 150 students have left the district. About 20 students a year equals about $100,000 a year in funding lost.

"I want to cry. It’s sad. I wish more kids would enroll and stop leaving the district for other schools," said Mary Moore.

An administrator and a teacher are losing their jobs because England Middle School is closing. Superintendent Henderson says she blames declining enrollment on people getting out of the farming business and moving out of the delta.
