FEMA to use trailers to house tornado victims

Hundreds of FEMA trailers originally bought for hurricane Katrina victims may finally be put to use. The trailers have been sitting at the airport in Hope after congress ordered FEMA to stop selling or donating them because of problems with formaldehyde.
Hundreds of FEMA trailers originally bought for hurricane Katrina victims may finally be put to use. The trailers have been sitting at the airport in Hope after congress ordered FEMA to stop selling or donating them because of problems with formaldehyde. In November FEMA determined its trailers were safe to use but was still testing the travel trailers stored at Hope.

Now FEMA wants to use some of the trailers to house tornado victims in Arkansas and Tennessee. When everything you own and the very foundation of your home is reduced to rubble you can only hope there's a better option than this.

Mary Myers gives us a tour of her tornado damaged mobile home. Before the storm hit she was getting ready to sell it and move. She says they came out and appraised it and knew exactly where it was at and said it was in good condition.

“He came back by the other day and said I’m afraid it won't be saleable in this state,” said Myers.

She can't sell it and she can barely live in it

“I'm staying at night but my heaters all wobbly and my microwave and stuff like that don't work. And my roof does leak,” said Myers.

The government is listening and acting quickly. FEMA announced 7,200 mobile homes stored in Hope will be made available to storm victims

“Wonderful, I didn’t know that,” Myers said.

And she is excited especially since the government says the homes are safe after they initially found toxic substances last year. And even though winds damaged Myers’ current mobile home she says she won't mind moving into another one

“Lots of people can't afford to build a roof frame home, buying all the appliances. This is what you call a ready made home,” said Myers.
