LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A convicted murderer stabbed a female prison correctional officer to death at an east Arkansas prison Friday while she was investigating whether he had an unauthorized pair of shoes, a prison spokeswoman said.

Sgt. Barbara Ester, 47, was stabbed in the side, abdomen and chest at about 12:30 p.m., said Shea Wilson, a spokeswoman for the Arkansas Department of Correction. Ester died about 3 p.m. at a hospital in Memphis, Tenn., about 40 miles away.

Ester, a 12-year veteran of the correction department, was a property officer who investigated whether inmates had contraband items. Wilson said the guard had received a report that Johnson had a pair of contraband shoes.

"This is obviously very difficult for the department when something tragic like this happens," Wilson said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Sgt. Ester's family. These officers - it's a tight-knit workplace. They look out for each other and are there together for a lot of hours of the day, so this is very difficult for everyone."

Wilson said the prison was locked down after the attack and that the inmate, Latavious Johnson, was being moved to the state's maximum-security unit at Varner. She said all the other inmates have been accounted for.

Johnson, 30, was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder out of Jefferson County. He was sentenced in 2000 for killing his father. Prosecutors said Johnson was 18 at the time of the crime.

Wilson said Johnson had had several disciplinary infractions, including one this week for not obeying orders, but hadn't previously attacked a guard.

"We will move him to the supermax (prison) so he will be out of that environment ... He needed to be out of that environment," Wilson said.

Arkansas State Police and the prison's internal affairs staff were investigating the stabbing. Wilson said authorities would turn over their information to prosecutors, who will determine whether to file charges against the inmate.

What exactly was the problem with the shoes? Was there actually a problem or was the Guard using them as an excuse to harass? May have went the way it should have. They are guards, they are not trying to correct anything are anybody. They are cops without vehicles.

I want to know is there not a pat down or is the inmate not searched if they are being questioned or suspected of having contraban even if it is only shoes he has already murdered someone and it looks like he should have been searched or at least detained in away he could not react violently to the officer. I know they have rights but a violent offender should be treated like they could attack at any moment. so sorry for this officer and her family.

The absence of sufficiently qualified mental health staff at McPherson and Grimes contributes to the inadequacy of mental health care. Neither Unit adequately supervises its inmates. The supervisory failures facilitate the introduction of contraband and promote violence, placing both inmates and staff at risk of serious harm. 1. Supervision The physical layout of both Units combined with the current placement of security staff prevent direct supervision of the housing units, thereby increasing the risk of harm to inmates and staff.June 2002, staff confiscated 14 shanks, one ice pick, and one box cutter. The failure to control such contraband and the lack of sufficient oversight by security staff allowed a Grimes inmate to stab another inmate with a shank on April 4, 2002. The assault occurred in one of the open, dormitory-style barracks (SOUND FAMILIAR) Here is the url so you read the whole report : http://www.justice.gov/crt/about/spl/documents/mcpherson_grimes_findinglet.pdf

Maybe if the guards would stop their subjective interperation of all the frivilous rules and quit harrassing the inmates things like this would not happen. Since the 1970's Arkansas Dept. of Correction has been been challenged in court for brutality and right now there are a large number of lawsuits against them but you never see or hear about.

Why are muderers housed with less violent criminals anyway,. Don;t hey segregate the perv's and rapists? Maybe our state ought to catch up wih the others and keep these kind of animals in a cage to themselves. I sure wouldn't have worried about someone like him over a pair of shoes. My sympathy to this family. He should have been somwewhere as bad as the Newport Women's Prison. Worst in the state. Should be for people like him.

Bertha, you dope. Without those officers, who'd keep the killers behind bars? Maybe you'd like to move next door to an unstaffed prison, but not me! I'm sorry you've encountered an officer that left a less than stellar impression on you, but lumping them all under that header shows your ignorance. Anyone who has ever truly had a need for help and has been blessed to deal with dedicated, outstanding officers (as I have) beg to differ!
