AUSTIN, AR - A former Austin police officer is behind bars accused of sexually assaulting a woman he arrested and had in handcuffs.

28-year-old William Tremaine Jr. resigned from the Austin Police Department in November when the allegations first surfaced. Three months later, Arkansas State Police wrap up the investigation by arresting Tremaine. State Police say Tremaine had sexual contact with a handcuffed female prisoner.

The Austin Police Chief John Statley isn't commenting on Tremaine's arrest. Statley says Tremaine resigned from the force in November for personal reasons.

Tremaine lives just miles from Austin in the neighboring town of Ward. People from both communities say they're shocked and surprised by the allegations and his arrest. Many say they can't imagine Tremaine doing anything like the allegations suggest.

Austin Everett knows Tremaine and says he never expected anything like this. "Tremaine never did anything. He's a good guy and a good officer I don't think anything like that happened."

Faith Taylor says the allegations are horrible and she can't believe they actually happened.

Everett says it's all just a misunderstanding, and thinks someone is lying. "I would just never figure anything like that from Tremaine."

Tremaine is being held without bond at the Lonoke County Jail. He'll appear in court Friday morning.

A charge of sexual assault in the 3rd degree means a person who commits sexual assault engages in sexual intercourse or deviant sexual activity with another person who is employed in a position of law enforcement.
