NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Defense leaders strike at the glass ceiling, making it possible for women to join their male compatriots on the front lines.  That means women can compete for more than 230,000 combat posts, which used to be off limits to them.

"I think it's the right thing to do. The women have proven their enormous contributions they've made in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Senator John McCain, (R) Arizona.

Top defense leaders rally behind the historic military milestone, but not all agree it's a safe choice, including a former Navy service member.

"While I was able to keep up in PT, on the battlefield, I was not able to have the stamina that a man would," said Laurie Lee.

Laurie Lee was the only woman in her detachment.  Before going on missions, she remembers her male counterparts would have to decide if she could handle the task or not.

She said having women join the men in those fierce moments could compromise the integrity of the mission.

"A man has his vision split then. He must decide do I defend this woman who is defending with me or do I fight against the enemy before me," Lee said.

She said women could make strides in other roles.

"The strongest woman will never be as strong as the strongest man in the world," Lee said.

Bet ya if they brought the draft back, women would be exempt; how's that for "equality"?

What is "230,000 combat posts"? Surely it can't mean MOS's. And there must be more men in the Infantry, Armor, Artillery, etc. than that. Men and women in the military of today should be trained as a "soldier". But covering my flank in a firefight; no thanks!

Give them the chance, let the DI's make the decision, if a woman can handle the equipment and stress they should have the opportunity. Have seen some on construction crews and on farms that can put a lot of men to shame. Don't judge them all by the short skirts and make-up.

I sure was raised to believe their are far better things to do with the ladies than having them catch bullets. I say no.

Certain jobs, certain career paths, ok - like in a tank or a helo, but not as ground infantry or mud marine. Too much equipment to carry today - even for the men. The personal equipment weight is an encumbrance.

Another NO BRAINER to me. I am a woman, and not a real feminine one at that, and I think it is ridiculous for women to be out there (maybe one to 100 men) in the battlefield. Then again, they can enlist, get pregnant, come home and draw $3000+ PTSD check for life. Yes.

When they make the Physical Fitness Requirements the same for men and women, then they might be able to get my agreement. There are two standards, in all the branches, so when that guy gets shot, and he has to be carried, hopefully there is a strong guy with him, very few girls will be able to do it.

Bad bad idea. I have a son and a daughter that went through Army Basic training. I can tell you that the womens' PT standards are much lower than the men. At Basic training graduation ceremony, there were women receiving PT awards who did much less than the men! If my son is injured in combat (and he is a good sized boy) I can tell you my daughter (and I love her dearly) would Not be able to carry him to safety.
