Future of Broadway Bridge in your hands

When it comes to the new Broadway Bridge project, everyone wants something different.

"I sure would like to see a little more emphasis on aesthetic," said one driver.

"Keep the bridge in its existing location," added another at Thursday's Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department's open forum on the bridge..

Now its just a matter of deciding what else drivers want to see.

The biggest question the highway department needs answered is do they keep the broadway bridge where it is now or do they move it over to the side to keep traffic flow going during construction?

"If we demolish the old bridge first, thats 24,000 vehicles a day that are going to have to find a new route across the river," said Randy Ort with the AHTD.

People we spoke to at the open forum say catering to drivers during construction isn't the most important factor here and they don't want to see a bridge that forces drivers to swerve in order to take it.

"It's just kind of weird," said one driver. "You turn, and you're not sure where you're going."

Most agree leaving the 90-year-old structure as-is is also not an option.

"It is deteriorating more rapidly than we would like to see a bridge deteriorate and that's why we are concerned about it," said Ort.

Federal funds have to be allocated by September 2013 in order to hang on to them, but the highway department is confident they'll have a solid design choice well before the deadline.

Pulaski county said they'll find the funds to make it more aesthetic than what it should be...Guess they think LR is going to have the next "golden gate bridge"..They need to just build a practical bridge...And then we have that ugly pineapple decor on the 630 overpass they're building..I wonder how much that non-sensical decoration cost..

I agree. Dont overspend on something thats not needed. The Big Dam Bridge was a big damn waste of money. Just build a bridge thats safe, big enough to handle the traffic and allow people to walk across. Do away with the stupid ass trolly that is rarely used and use that money for something valuable, like the bridge. The whole trolley idea was stupid.

When did our opinions start to matter? I am sure that it is a DONE DEAL...just patronizing citizens now. Personally, I hate change, especially that swerving traffic thing that happens when something is moved over....I am with Arkansas Yankee....practical and as inexpensive as possible. People are not going to come to Little Rock to see our "BIGGEST DAM BRIDGE"...I promise. From listening to police dispatch it looks like we need to spend any money we have for space to put about 50 people a day away for a while. I didn't really realize the cesspool of crime Little Rock had become until I started listening. I knew it was bad, but. Our police officers are to be commended for RISKING THEIR LIVES 24-7 like they do and the CRIMINALS SHOULD KNOW THEY TAKE THAT SAME RISK. The multitude of NONSENSE CALLS is ridiculous, two people fighting, "check the guy laying in the street out", people staggering, hollaring, half naked, etc etc....a multitude of gun related calls 24-7 and the criminals have the advantage of KNOWING where the officer is when he shows up,,.,,.think about it,. God Bless LRPD

Aesthetic means more expensive. Government needs to tighten the belt just like we do. Just build a pratical safe bridge. 24,000 a day? Aren't there two other bridges? Build it where it is now.
