Governor Beebe Faces Rare Challenge in Appointing New Treasurer

Arkansas' next treasurer must have integrity and a reputation people can have confidence in, according to Governor Mike Beebe.
LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Arkansas' next treasurer must have integrity and a reputation people can have confidence in, according to Governor Mike Beebe.

The governor says those are just a few of the qualities one needs to replace Martha Shoffner.

It's a unique position for the governor, as in his 6-plus years, he's never had to appoint someone to fill a constitutional office void.

But with Shoffner's criminal case surfacing, that's now become the task.

Beebe says he's not on any strict timeline to appoint a replacement for the recently-resigned Shoffner, who faces a potential 20-year prison sentence connected to extortion charges that surfaced over the weekend.

The governor has some people in mind, but he's not going to float potential candidates.

"You need a treasurer, and while that office will proceed with a bunch of professionals, they still need a leader," Beebe said. "They don't need to be in limbo very long, so we need to act within the next several days."

The person appointed would serve through January 2015, when a new elected state treasurer takes office.
