Governor Declares April as "Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month" at Cabot Banquet

Open Arms Shelter held the event with the guest of honor Governor Mike Beebe.
Cabot, AR - Governor Beebe made a stop at an event in Cabot Thursday (4/4) night to proclaim April as "Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month."

Open Arms Shelter held the event with the guest of honor Governor Mike Beebe.

"There are a lot of organizations that really work trying to make the whole month of April Child Abuse and Awareness month," Chairman of the Board for Open Arms, Merritt Holman said. "We're just so pleased to have him here tonight to really honor the past board members and some of the people in Cabot and Lonoke for the shelter and for the children."

It was at the first annual Open Arms Shelter Benefit to raise awareness for child abuse and raise money for the shelters in central Arkansas. The shelters house children that have been taken out of their living situation by DHS to have a place they can call home.

The Governor remarks Open Arms' history of taking kids that some other shelters may not take and the seven thousand cases of child abuse last year, made it an easy decision to make this declaration.

He said, "Declaring the month and heightening the awareness for all of our people is a part of my job and one I'm happy to do."

They had a silent auction helping raise money for the shelters.

Somewhere around 4-500 people came out for the event at Cabot Junior High.

In honor of the month, the Bank of America building in downtown Little Rock will display a blue ribbon on the side of the building starting April 8th.
