LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Green Party of Arkansas says it's nominated former Harlem Globetrotter Fred Smith — who was ruled ineligible for the ballot as a Democrat — for a state House seat.
The party held its nominating convention on May 6 and picked Smith as its candidate for House District 50.
Smith filed in March to run as a Democrat but the state Democratic Party filed suit to keep him off the ballot. Smith was elected to the House but resigned last year because of a felony theft conviction.
A Chicot County judge dismissed Smith's theft conviction — but a judge in Pulaski County ruled he couldn't run as a Democrat because that conviction wasn't cleared at the time he filed.
Smith will face Democrat Rep. Hudson Hallum in November. No Republicans are running.
