I think that every single person who comes back from a war is a changed person. The degree to which they are changed varies from person to person. For some, they are changed so much that they commit violent crimes as civilians that they never would have committed if they were not suffering from P.T.S.D. Those people need and deserve treatment, not lengthy jail sentences. In their cases, our govt is to blame for not realizing how sick they were before just turning them over to the civilian population without propèr treatment. They are not to blame. In other cases, the returned soldier who commits violence knew what they were doing and did it anyway. It is up to juries to determine if that ex-soldier is sane or insane, suffering from P.T.S.D. or not. Although I think juries usually get it right I also think they sometimes get it right. Sometimes, I think they get so upset at the defendant for what they did that they don't properly take into account why they did it. In short, the jury is out for blood. In those cases, it is a blessing when a higher court overturns their verdict. Personally, I think that it is well documented how much war messes people up. I would be very reluctant to choose punishment over treatment when deciding the fate of a soldier. I figure that even if they are sane they are still not thee person who went in to the military unless they had a history of violence before they enlisted. In such cases as that, I would be more likely to convict them of murder and not have any leniency unless doctors were adamant that they are insaane. Anyway, God have mercy on our soldiers that return home messed up and God bless the families and friends of those that are killed by them. Finally, God make the guilty to pay whether that be the returned soldiers or our govt that failed to take proper care of them. God bless.

Let me first say that I don't condone Mr. Russells actions and nor am I making up excuses for this man. He took a life and his actions have to be accounted for. The sadness of the situation is that many lives are being affected and PTSD plays a big part. So many of you just don't understand how severity of PTSD. I personally work in a field where I see ( on a daily basis ) the affects of PTSD. January is not over with and their has been several suicides of our Soldiers that have come home from serving 1 or more terms and all of these cases have been centered around PTSD. Our Soldiers are taking their own lives, killing others, becoming addicts of alcohol, drugs and/or becoming homeless because they don't know how to survive when returning. The problem we're having is our nation, our government and our politicians are not taking proper measures to assist our soldiers with the care they need when they return home. We need to also educate ourselves in the severity and different behaviors of PTSD so that situations like this may be prevented. My heart goes out to the families and friends affected by this tragedy. May God have mercy on you Mr. Russell and Ms. Ownes you are an angel now may your death make a difference in all of our lives. PTSD or not he can't shoot anyone else in the head 4 times. No pity from me!

PTSD or not, he had a history of abusing women and knew good and well what he was doing when he shot her 4 times in the head.

I knew this man personally, and I am also a fellow vet. However, i knew nothing about this case until two days ago. I am mindblown. He suffered from PTSD, without a doubt. As do thousands of our troops coming home. Please give our vets the care needed when we come home

I am sure our state Supreme Court justices are licking their chops already over this one, ready to overturn the conviction.
