JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas State University police say a handgun brought to campus by a student for protection accidentally discharged inside a dorm room.

No one was injured when the gun fired shortly before midnight Wednesday.

The student who brought the gun to campus is identified as 22-year-old Ricky Dean Langston of Jonesboro. He's now charged with possession of a firearm on a school campus.

The Jonesboro Sun reports that Langston said he was showing the .357 caliber weapon to a friend at the dorm when it accidentally discharged.

University police say the bullet went through a bed frame and apparently out an open window.

Guns do NOT go off by themselves. Someone pulled the trigger. This is clearly operator error. Stupid is as stupid does.
