Philander Smith & AR Baptist spend a lot more money than UALR on fixed security measures (gates around all parking areas belonging to the school, guardposts with actual guards in them, etc). You have to spend money to be safe these days - and that includes investing your kid in some shooting lessons at a gun range and getting started on a CC permit instead of handing her something out of the toolbox. It's not that difficult to survive in a city (and Little Rock is not a major metropolis like Atlanta or St. Louis). You just have to play it smart and spend a little money/time. A decade or so ago UALR spent all that money on dorms expecting students who could afford (or bother) to live on campus when they should have spent it on better securing all the area they cover, and it's not like it's a big secret that the school's been a part of "the hood" for the past 25 or so years.

It's easy to track the criminals at Philander Smith. They are in class during the day and at McArthur Park at night playing ball and smoking dope.

When the college was first started as LR Junior College the area was very nice. Oak Forest and other areas around there were first class. The inner city has encroached on UALR and it is a shame that there is so much crime now. A camera in all areas would help a little but there must be an increase in armed security to let the muggers know they could be shot if need be. The campus is so spread out it would be expensive to cover all of it but protection is paramount. I just wonder how Philander Smith and Ark Baptist handle security in their neighborhoods.

all those foreign students don't realize they're attending college in the ghetto...but that area's probably ritzy to them.

Put a college in or near the hood and this will happen.
