I-40 now closed in both directions

Eastbound and westbound traffic on I-40 have been closed due to flooding.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - Eastbound and westbound traffic on I-40 have been closed due to flooding in eastern Arkansas.

The eastbound closure comes a day after the westbound lanes were closed. The westbound detour, which is about 120 miles, was jam-packed all Thursday. One truck driver described the scene as a "parking lot full of semis." The driver estimates traffic is moving at an average pace of around 10mph. There is no reason to think that the new eastbound detour, which goes through De Witt, will be any faster.

The eastbound detour begins at Hazen (mile marker 193). The westbound detour begins at Brinkley (mile marker 216).

The White River, which is causing the flooding, is not expected to crest in the region until late Saturday. Only then is the water expected slowly to recede. There is no telling when I-40 will be restored to full functionality.
