LITTLE ROCK, AR - A group of Arkansas doctors are speaking out against the effort to legalize "medical marijuana" at the ballot box. However, the Arkansas Medical Society is not standing by them.

A handful of doctors, calling themselves the Physician Coalition Against Medical Marijuana are taking issue with legislation they feel provides too little oversight.

"We felt like we had to make a statement because the majority of our physicians are against it," says Dr. David Smith, a palliative care physician at Baptist Health Medical Center.

Palliative care specializes in helping patients deal with pain and suffering.

"We use medications that are far more powerful and far more addicting than marijuana, but they're regulated, they're controlled," Smith says.

The self-described, ad hoc group of physicians, admits not speaking for all. The Arkansas Medical Society hasn't taken a position.

And Marvin Singleton, former Missouri Medical Board chairman takes the opposite stand in a statement released today.

"Issue 5 is a compassionate measure. Moreover, it has been drafted to ensure that only seriously ill patients will qualify to use medical marijuana. I encourage all voters to support it," Singleton says.

Gary Fults with Arkansans for Compassionate Care say 75 Arkansas doctors support it too, but won't speak out for fear it could affect their livelihoods.

"We recommend everyone read the initiative and ask questions about it instead of listening to all the rhetoric that's out there," Fults says.

Rhetoric that may or may not be reaching people already voting early.

AMS may change its public stance on medical marijuana when its governing board meets in Little Rock November 1st.

lf it wasn't for marijuana, my sister who had pancreatic cancer wouldn't have had an easier time with her chemotherapy and radiation therapy during her last 21 months of life! It helped her with the pain and with her appetite! Plus my brother who is in renal failure has a medical marijuana card in Michigan and he was able to get off the Pain pills that were causing his other organs problems! I know what pain is, because I have lived with it for 12 1/2yrs because of a careless driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed head-on with us! Now when I vote on Tuesday, you bet your butt... I'm for the medical marijuana card!! I sure hope we get enough votes to pass this too!!!

To all the "Christians" out there against this - "And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yelding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. And the earth brouht forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that IT was good." Amen! Now when you go vote against this, know that you vote against the Word of God! Heathen hypocrites!

Lumberman is probably right. Look at where AR ranks in education. Lower than average test scores. Lower than average graduation rates. This means we have a larger percentage of ignorant ( lack of knowledge ) people in our state. Ignorance is bliss they say. A lot of happy people running around. People that are dumb enough to believe the Federal propaganda such as "Reefer Madness". Dumb enough to fall for the medical industries lies and propaganda. Sad. And then there are the so called "Christians". If you believe in the Word of God, try Genesis 1:11,12. God made this plant for a reason; and it wasn't to persecute those that use it! We have a chance to lead the South into the 21st Century; and I fear we are going to screw it up. But my house is still voting for it! As will most intelligent people.

You don't hear these doctors stepping forward to accept responsibility for any of the damages or deaths associated with the chemical mixtures they recommend you to purchase and consume. No one has ever died from voluntarily consuming marijuana. There have been deaths over who controls the market and by the police who enforce the prohibition policies. So first get your priorities in order before you condemn a plant that people can grow for free in their own backyard.

You can almost see the desperation in these doctors - "you neeeeed us to sign the scripts, pleeeease don't go to pot on us!" Perish the thought marijuana becomes readily available when Big Pharma and all these Dr. Pillgoods out there are making so much money off painkillers and anti-anxiety/antidepressant meds.

The drugs that are prescribed by Doctors like morphine or chemo drugs are much more powerful and deadly than marajuana which is an herb that has never killed anyone, just like caffenine has never killed anyone. And the pharmacies are crying because they wont get a piece of the MONEY. They want it to be dispensed BY THEM so they can make a PROFIT on it, ALWAYS FOLLOW THE MONEY TRAIL. in order to see what is really going on.

It's not that they are against MM, it's that they are against losing their kickbacks from the pill pushers because they won't be prescribing the highly addictive opiates anymore. It's ALL about the $$$
