BATESVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Independence County authorities say the death of a Southside teenager who was fatally shot this past weekend was an accident.

Sixteen-year-old Zane Riddiough was at a residence near Desha with a group of friends when the gun he was handling discharged and struck him about 8 p.m. Saturday.

Sheriff's detective Mike Mundy told the Batesville Daily Guard for Friday's editions that investigators are tracing the history of the weapon to see how it ended up at the home.

Police say the firearm was stolen but they don't think Riddiough or anyone who was with him had anything to do with the theft. The type of weapon involved in the incident has not been revealed.

An investigation into the shooting continues.
