Mayflower Residents File Lawsuit Against Exxon

MAYFLOWER, AR -- A number of Mayflower residents have filed suit against Exxon following the oil spill in the Northwoods subdivision in late March, saying the company violated the Arkansas Solid Waste Management Act.

The suit alleges that 10,000 barrels of oil were spilled, and that some of that oil flowed into Lake Conway, with harmful toxins still present in the air and water near the area.

The complainants say that a switch to abrasive tar sands oil and expansion of the pipeline to increase flow to 30,000 barrels per day added stress to an already-aging pipeline.

Other allegations stated in the complaint include a history of failing to inspect pipeline problems the that Exxon was aware of before the spill, and that the company knowingly concealed pipeline defects from Mayflower residents.

The complaint demands a jury trial, but no specific dollar amount is mentioned.
