LITTLE ROCK, AR – Members of the Little Rock Education Association picketed outside of the Little Rock School District Administration building Thursday evening, hoping present a united front in advance of salary negotiations.

"We will not start school next fall without a financial agreement," said LREA President Kathy Koehler. "We will not go nine months being tread on repeatedly by this district."

Nine months of failed salary negotiations is now bringing teachers, custodians, security officers and other district employees out to picket for higher pay the night before a federal mediator steps in to help the district find a solution.

"We will find resolution," said Koehler. "It would just be great if we could find it sooner rather than later."

"I just want what's fair. What equal for everybody. It's not fair that some people get raises and others don't," said kindergarten teacher Anna Wierciak.

"My teachers, staff members, security people, all of us have a right to have a raise," added English teacher Susan Merry.

And with less than five weeks left in the school year, time to speak up is running out.

LREA and the school district will meet with a federal mediator Friday morning, hoping to come to an agreement after months of failed negotiations.

The average teacher makes about 40-45 thousand dollars per year or I should say 9 months at the very most, while the rest of us make less than $30,000.00 per year in Arkansas. The teachers said that they would not show up next year if they don't get a raise, hold them to it and give the job to someone who really wants to work. There are a lot of people who would be thankful to have a job who are unemployed.

I think that when our school children start getting better test scores, and using proper grammer, then the school teachers will have earned a raise. When a teacher said: "I am a english teacher", instead of saying: "I am an English teacher", she is just one example of why she may need a better education herself. You have to be smarter than a child to teach them. Parents, homeschool your babies!

Ok, I have always supported teachers. I know they have a nerve racking job putting up with kids all day. But, I have to express my thoughts to the teachers in PCSSD and LRSD. Stop being a bunch of cry babies and teach! My spouse and I are both state employees. We work 40+ hours a week each, you are in the class room from maybe 7:45am to 3pm? We work year round, you only work 9 months a year. Yes, you do take work home with you, so do we, our offices are that short handed. We have not received a cost of living raise in 3 years now! You have. Now my spouse is working a 2nd job just to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads. So, next time you are out on the picket lines whining about you want ANOTHER raise, just remember, all the other state employees wish we had had the ones you have recieved in the last 3 years! By the way, we have several friends and family that are teachers. Have a great summer off...I've got to go back to clipping coupons and trying to stretch our paychecks on my day off today.

Get in line with the rest of society, No raise for 3 years. There was a day and time for the unions, but they are out living their usefullness. What happened to negotiating your own terms? Why do you need someone to do it for you? You don't like what they offer go somewhere else.
