LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Middle school reform took place Thursday night for the Little Rock School District. The superintendent presented a plan to the school board eliminating the current block schedule and opting for an 8-period day.

"Mr. President, we have had our teacher group union to vote. They voted last Friday and they are very supportive. They are the people who will be doing the teaching," said Superintendent Morris Holmes.

More electives, like broadcasting, will be added to the curriculum under the new plan. The change also allows teachers to have more planning time, which gave some members worry.

But administrators say the accountability factor will be with each principal.

"We will meet with the principals, registrars, and counselors and design the schedule that the kids will actually have and they will have the opportunity to pick new electives and so forth," said Associate Superintendent Marvin Burton.

Why is the school district changing the block schedule, a eight periods in on day is too much. The reason why the school district is doing this is they are too lazy to step up to the plate. And Jody Carreiro maybe if you would sit in on classes you will learn the reason why students are not proficient and advanced levels on standardized testing is because you do not know what is going on at the middle schools. Studies have shown that the 90-minute block format is simply too much time for middle school students. Adolescents in that age group typically have attention spans that cannot sustain an hour-long lesson. So Jody think about what you do before taking away what has been working for so long.
