We were in Iowa in the late 90's when block scheduling was the new concept to go into the schools. Our highschool principal at that time said it was inevitable that less material would be covered. I remember thinking at the time that it was crazy - why were we adopting a schedule that would further dumb down our schools? Going back to 45 minute classes is a good thing!

Education is such a comedic farce and is always beholden to the flavor of the month. Not too long ago, everyone sang the praises of block scheduling and how it would give so much quality learning time to the students. Ha! LRSD should just leave it alone and save the taxpayers a few million dollars by not having to re-implement it again 10 years from now.

As a teacher I have always advocated the shorter classes and seeing the students everyday. I am supprised they only want to do it for middle school, the high school is also needing this. Shorter, more dynamic lessons, and keeping the student's attention is easier in shorter classes, and seeing them the next day instead of 2 days later helps with reinforcement of the lesson.
