LRSD deals with budget concerns

Little Rock schools need repair and maintenance issues addressed soon.
LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Little Rock schools need repair and maintenance issues addressed soon.

"A school district that neglects it schools will crumble," said superintendent Morris Holmes.

The only way to pay for repairs is by making cuts or seeking new revenue. Leaders brought up several ideas for handling the problem Thursday night, including a possible millage increase.

But leaders say that option is only just an idea at this point.

"It was mentioned and that's it. Citizens don't want to go there. I don't want to go there," said Holmes.

No decision was made tonight. But leaders say big challenges are ahead.

"This was the groundwork. Now the real work and decisions will begin," said board president Jody Carreiro.

Leaders also discussed the loss of desegregation money, saying all expenses not required by the state will be considered for cutting.
