LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Legislators are expected to hear from the head of the Arkansas Department of Correction after the state's top court threw out a 2009 execution law earlier this year.
Department of Correction Director Ray Hobbs is slated to address the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday ahead of the 2013 legislative session.
Hobbs' visit to the Capitol comes after justices in June sided with a number of death row inmates who argued that the 2009 law violated part of the state's constitution that deals with separating the branches of government.
The 2009 law said death sentences are to be carried out by lethal injection of one or more chemicals that the director of the Department of Correction chooses.
Arkansas hasn't put anyone to death since 2005, in part because of legal challenges.
