CONWAY, Ark. (AP) - A former emergency room doctor has pleaded not guilty to the slayings of two men in Conway in 2002.
The Log Cabin Democrat reports Richard Conte entered his plea in circuit court Wednesday in Faulkner County. Authorities had the 61-year-old Conte extradited from Nevada where he had just completed a kidnapping sentence.
Conte is charged capital murder for the deaths of 48-year-old Carter Elliott and 25-year-old Timothy Robertson.
Conte had finished about nine years of a 15-year prison term in Nevada and was to be freed when the Arkansas charges were filed against him.
Officials say Conte kidnapped Lark Gathright-Elliott. Conte had been married to the woman briefly after she divorced Elliott, to whom she was married for 18 years.
Conte asked the judge to appoint a lawyer for him.
