HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — An alleged illegal alien charged with posing as a Garland County sheriff's deputy had undergone a background check when he applied to be a cadet at the department at age 14 in 2005.
The Sentinel-Record reports that Wilmar Arnulfo Perez of Hot Springs is to have a hearing on Nov. 1 to answer a felony charge of criminal impersonation of a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor counts.
The sheriff's department says that when Perez underwent the 2005 background check, he was found to have a valid Arkansas ID and no other record was indicated.
After his Wednesday arrest, federal immigration officials put a hold on Perez because he was allegedly in the U.S. illegally.
