FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) — Authorities say a 74-year-old man has died in a fire in Fort Smith.

Police told KHBS-TV that James Ballard was found dead inside the residence Sunday morning.

No foul play is suspected.

Investigators say they initially believed the fire was suspicious because they found an open safe, but they later determined it wasn't secure.

Police says Ballard may have been a heavy smoker.

His body is being sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy.
