Man fears eviction because of service dog

MORRILTON, AR - "It's killing me. It really is," said John Engles, sitting alongside his dog Gabby. "It's not right."

Gabby is not a pet, she's Engle's service dog. Engles' heart doesn't pump blood properly. That's why he has an oxygen tank, and Gabby has all of his life saving medications.

"This is nitroglycerin," Engles explained after pulling it out of a coat that Gabby wears everywhere. "I use on average two to three tablets a day."

Engles and Gabby live in Park Place Apartments which is public housing in Morrilton. Problem is, signs are now posted there saying dogs must be kept on a leash.

"There's been several times where that's happened. Where people have gone down and laid across the leash while they collapse and then their service animal couldn't help them because it couldn't get free to seek help," Engles explained. "That's what I'm trying to avoid."

And that brings us to why the signs are posted in the first place. Both Engles and apartment management tell us Gabby scared a child inside his apartment building a few weeks back, but didn't physically harm her. The child's mom complained. Since then, Engles claims he's been threatened with eviction if he doesn't keep Gabby on a leash. He says that's unnecessary and against the law. For the record, apartment management denies he's been threatened with eviction -- they don't deny posting the signs.

Said Engles, "this is a right and a wrong I have to fight. I have to fight for what's right." He continued, "Like I say, I've backed down as far as I'm gonna back down. They've got me in a corner and I'm not gonna let it happen."

Richard Upton, the executive director of the Morrilton Housing Authority says that Engles will not be evicted for keeping Gabby off a leash, saying he just wants to make sure everyone's rights are upheld. Upton says the housing authority is conducting an investigation regarding what happened, if anything, between Gabby and the young girl.

Butch54 I have to agree that you do make it sound personal something like anger even. Then maybe that's just how you talk.

That was another comment for the whole group of haters. If you can't afford to move I know you couldn't replace her. Please I'm not going at you on a personal level. My thoughts are thrown out for the whole. Get over it. Have I ever typed in @RG. No. Till I do please quit taking it personal.

In my opion I am wondering...If his heart and breathing are so bad that he needs a service dog why does he smoke roll your own cigarettes while he has his oxygen tank on him.Been seen several times doing this.

Why should I buy the next one for you Butch54 when you wouldn't do the same for me and you and I both know that. So let us end here with these final comments and go no further.

Get them out of a wad jade. That was meant for everyone that is unhappy about where the live. Not for you only. You just aren't that important. People I also read the whole story. Maybe you didn't catch my second post in your anger. I fully know about being disabled as I am. My dog stays leashed. I paid for it out of my pocket. But I'll gladly unleash her as soon as you contact me that you will buy the next one if something goes wrong.

Sorry Mr. Butch54 looks like it was my flub up this time around on tracking number, but at least I'm willing to admit it. That still doesn't excuse several past lost postal deliveries to me by the postal service and mail that should rightly have been returned because of a lost since invalid address either by the postal service in Little Rock or here in Morrilton.

And your suggestion sgmaps is most appreciated and welcome, oddly enough I traveled and lived in Colorado and New Mexico in the early 1950's and early 1960's and they're beautiful country at least in the 1950's . If I'm not mistaken there's a place Colorado called Garden of the Gods but my place is along the ocean and lots of humidity and salt air from the sea. And once again thank you for the suggestion. Best

@ R. Gilbert, this is a respectful suggestion, I know from a friend that Colorado treats their disabled residents very well. Do you have the resources to consider a move to Colorado?

He didn't claim he had been threatened with eviction, & as for your comment of why couldn't he just keep the 'figgen' medicine in his pocket, perhaps if he does have an instance where he collapses, his medicine could become inaccessible. Think before you speak & be thankful that you aren't in his medical situation.

Tired the only think want have to put with is a stinking swing shift sleeping cycle and being in the apartment and feeling like I'm in an isolation room 24/7 365 days of the year. The place I'm aiming for breaths life and excitement into me and keeps my battery on a trickle charge as does the Louisiana sun.
