this story has nothing to do with bus safety. Cars are required by law to stop on the opposite side of the road when a bus is stopped and children are boarding or disembarking, no matter the speed limit of the road. It sounds like your problem is with the speed limit with where you live. Also, locking the doors to a school is a no-brainer safety measure. And no, the Jonesboro shooting was not exacerbated by faculty and students inability to get back into the school because of locked doors.

The westside shooting in Jonesboro, AR was successful because the doors were locked. Students and Teachers were not able to get back into the building after the door shut.

If kids live on both sides of a "highway", how can you route the bus to pick them up on one side of the road? Its about the location of the bus pick up. Almost every school bus I see picking up kids will actually position the bus over the centerline while loading and unloading to prevent cars from going through. Does it work all of the time? I am sure there have been incidents where a driver has screwed up. But that is a safe measure to do. And it is not a fire hazard to have doors locked at a school. They make various types of fire/security doors for just that reason. I'm in the security business, have seen several of them. This is a simple case of a dumbass criminal running from the law. His sorry ass should be punished to the max for driving through a school building.

Judyj is right! I was hit by a car on a residential street while walking to my elementary school. TONS of people in hillbilly Arkansas drive under the influence and they get away with it! Gee I can't imagine why! I'm sure it doesn't have anything to do with the great job of the Arkansas law enforcement. (sarcasm!)

People are distracted all the time while driving. They text and drive, talk on phone and drive, eat and drive, tend to kids that are fussing while driving. Some are also drugged up on pain pills, some are drunk. Some are just driving in a rage. Umm. Shall I go on?? With this said, a child should NOT walk across the street of a highway in which the speed limit is 55 mph simply to catch a bus.

No. I don't think so. I think I care about the safety of my children and all children. Umm. The bus can be routed in a way to where the kids are picked up on the side of the HIGHWAY they live on. Keep Kids Safe!!!
