MAUMELLE, AR – With the environmental impact study just completed, Maumelle is one step closer to getting a third entrance into the city. The city hosted a public hearing Tuesday to show proposed routes, which would create an interchange on I-40 northwest of the 40/430 interchange.

The new interchange could open as soon as 2015, but it would come with an estimated $15 million price tag. Mayor Mike Watson says the city will need additional funding, federal or otherwise, to complete the project.

Three routes were shown at the meeting. Alternative one would continue northeast from Carnahan Drive to I-40. Alternative 2 would extend Carnahan Drive southeast to Counts Masse Road, then extend east to I-40. Alternative 3 would simple be the extension of Counts Masse.

At best this will reduce Blvd traffic with a downtown destination. Currently the people entering 430 northbound from the Blvd do not back up traffic. The bottleneck is south on 430 over the bridge traffic. To solve this, a third lane is need on Maumelle Blvd; not an entrance to I-40.
