LOWELL, Ark. (AP) — Lowell Mayor Eldon Long says the city's police chief has died after a hit-and-run motorcycle crash in Florida.

Long says Joe Landers died at 1:05 a.m. Friday, surrounded by family.

Fayetteville TV station KHOG reports that Landers was involved in the wreck last week while on vacation in Panama City, Florida. Authorities say the chief was riding with a group of bikers when a driver pulled in front of Landers without signaling.

Police say Landers struck the vehicle and flew over his handlebars onto the ground.

Authorities say the driver initially fled but was arrested later on drug and traffic violations, along with fleeing the scene of a critical injury accident.

Landers had been with the Lowell police department for 17 years, serving as chief for 15 years.

My prayers are with the family of Chief Landers as well as his police family in Lowell and the state. I pray justice will be served in this case.
