Mayor Wants Night Clubs to Close Earlier

Pine Bluff Mayor Debe Hollingsworth wants night clubs to close at 1:00 a.m.
PINE BLUFF, AR - The mayor of Pine Bluff is proposing night clubs close earlier to diminish violence.

Mayor Debe Hollingsworth has drafted a proposal for club owners to shut their doors at 1:00 a.m.

The police department stands behind her, saying crime doubles -- even quadruples -- after 2:00 a.m. Many club owners hire security to help cut down on violence, but leaders say those security guards sometimes get overwhelmed.

Club owners hope council members vote it down.

"Club owners, we're not just doing this for fun. We're business owners also. It's all about the type of people you attract and the way you run your club," said Anthony Rogers, owner of the soon-to-open Swan's Bar & Lounge.

Some clubs in the city stay open until 5:00 a.m. In 2010, the city council tried to close clubs earlier, but they changed their vote.
