Memphis in May Kicks Off

Music fest opens with wet and cold weather.
MEMPHIS, TN ( - Rain or shine, hot or cold, Memphis in May's 37th Beale Street Music Festival kicks off Friday night.

As bands were getting ready to take the stage for the next three days, fans were gearing up for a wet weekend. Out-of-towners say they'll have fun in spite the weather.

"The biggest thing on the agenda is to make sure the 100,000 people down here on the weekend have as enjoyable a time as possible," says Memphis in May Executive Vice-President Diane Hampton.

Thousands have traveled hours to be in Memphis for the weekend.

"We're going to have a great time, the weather doesn't matter," says Gregg Elkins. "It's only water."

"We're all planning on having fun," says Arley Cash. He traveled with a group from Illinois. "For a lot of us, it's the first time here."

The weather may be an inconvenience, but the cold and rain won't spoil their fun

"I've got my rubber boots and I'm ready to go," says Amanda Fuller. "I've got my layers. I wish I'd brought my thermals honestly, but that's okay. The weather is not dampening my spirits whatsoever. I'm ready to go."

One thing you can't bring to Tom Lee Park is an umbrella.

"Because of the safety in large crowds," Hampton says. "Panchos and rain jackets with a hood are preferable."

Hampton is expecting a successful weekend. She's hoping music fans will roll with whatever Mother Nature brings to town.

"The show goes on. We'll have great music. You just need to come prepared. I promise there's going to be entertainment enough to make it a hot night."
