NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR – A proposed beekeeping ordinance aimed at helping the city’s community gardens was pulled at the last minute during the North Little Rock City Council meeting Monday night.
The ordinance would have required beekeepers to keep all hives at least 25 feet away from building and roads. It’s something that beekeeper Jay Scott could not do on his pie-shape lot.
“I’ve talked to the neighbors on both sides and they haven’t complained at all. In fact, one neighbor didn’t even know I had bees for more than a year,” says Scott.
The proposal was Alderwoman Debi Ross’ idea. It was supposed to set up guidelines for the city’s neighborhood gardening program. Ross did not realize it would negatively impact the beekeepers, so when they spoke out against the plan, she pulled it from consideration.
Now Scott, who went into beekeeping three years ago, is free to continue his business with locally made honey.
