NLRPD Investigating Murder

Police say 49-year-old Cornell Buchanon was shot and killed early Sunday morning.
NORTH LITTLE ROCK- North Little Rock Police are investigating a homicide and asking for help tracking down the suspect.

North Little Rock Police say they got a call around 1:30 Sunday morning about a shooting. Neighbors say they didn't even know what was going on until police showed up. Investigators say there are very few witnesses to the crime and they need help tracking down the suspect.

The landlord of the duplex on the 4200 block of Turner Street in North Little Rock spent Sunday afternoon piling belongings out on the curb where his tenant, 49-year-old Cornell Buchanon, was shot and killed. Police found Buchanon with at least one gunshot wound unresponsive inside the duplex, and unable to tell police what happened to him. He was taken to Baptist Hospital, but police say he didn't make it.

Neighbors say the area is prone to criminal activity and they see police patrolling the streets often. Sgt. Brian Dedrick with the North Little Rock Police Department says officers are routinely called to that area. "That's the rural part of the city, but we do try to be proactive in that area."

Sgt. Dedrick says investigators are in the process of talking to the landlord, friends, family, and neighbors, but information is limited. "Trying to get people to cooperate can be very challenging sometimes, and we try to make people understand we want to take care of their neighborhood."

The landlord and neighbors suggest Buchanon may have been shot in some sort of drug related activity. Police aren't ruling anything out, but there are many details of the case missing. Investigators know someone knows something about what happened, and Sgt. Dedrick says that's why detectives need the public's helping solving this case. "It's one of the hardest things we face is getting people to come forward and give us the critical information that they may have."

Anyone with any information is asked to call the North Little Rock Police Department, and  and you can remain anonymous.
