LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Department of Human Services says nearly six tons of prescription medications were turned over to law enforcement as part of a national drug collection program.
The unwanted and expired medications were collected Oct. 29 during the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Take Back Initiative.
The state Department of Human Services said in a news release Monday that 11,924 pounds of medications were collected in the Arkansas Take Back event.
The Arkansas State Crime Laboratory estimated the collected medications to be 16.6 million pills.
The Arkansas National Guard Counterdrug Program and the DEA took the medications to a licensed hazardous waste facility in El Dorado where they were destroyed.
