LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Friday afternoon, Jonesboro police released new video of a man who died while in their custody.

The video takes us back to that deadly day on July 28th. It shows officers pulling Chavis Carter out of a truck.

Footage shows them pat the 21-year-old down, finding what they first thought was only marijuana.

From there, authorities place Carter in the back of a police car while they continue their investigation on the outside of the car.

At that point, authorities say Carter shot himself in the head with a concealed gun while still in handcuffs. Police say they did not find a gun during their pat down.

The video does not show the shooting because it was not released by police. But FOX16 is still trying to get those images.

However, the recording does capture the conversation between the officers.

"I patted him down.I don't know where he had it hidden. We were talking and about to get back in the car and we thought we heard a funny noise. We heard a pop and got in. We smelled gun power and he was leaned over. He was handcuffed behind him," said the unidentified officer.

But Carter's mother says the incident makes no sense and her son wasn't suicidal.

"They searched him twice. I just want to know what really happened," said Theresa Carter.

Hey Hubert! What video have you been watching? From all the video I've seen, I don't recall the officers "pulling" Chaves from the truck!

Where was the gun found after he allegedly shot himself? I havent heard that yet. There are still way to many unanswered questions in this.

Don't think it's going away any time soon. CYA for the LEO's involved. I too find it odd that the video stops before the shooting, then resumes afterwards. I'm not defending the victim, or pointing fingers at the law; but this story does stink. Two searches, and no gun? Granted, the first was a quick pat down; it is possible he hid the gun in the patrol car before the second search. As to what he was trying to do with the gun, if indeed he had one, reckon we'll never know. I simply can't imagine suicide over drug charges though.

I find it odd that the video stops just before he "shot" himself. It must have cost quite a bit to doctor the video to keep the cops out of the back seat.

I think the media would love to turn this into a Rodney King scandal. That's why the story won't die.

I agree with protector. How many times are we going to keep hearing this. Ever see a young child telling a lie. When one doesn't seem good enough they have another handy and just keep up coming up with more. Let it die.

@protector20: You just made a really great point! I thought this was suicide from the start because even a person who is not typically suicidal may still act unpredictable when under extreme pressure(such as going to jail), but I never thought he may have tried to have the gun ready for the next police officer to open the car door. Very very possible.

He didn't have to be suicidal to shoot himself in the head. He could have just been a lousy shot. How long are we going to keep this story in the news? There is no conspiracy or cover-up here. He was sitting in the back of a police car and either he shot himself with a gun or it went off while he was trying to get it. It's not the most unusual thing to happen to someone in the back of a police car.
