LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Arkansas Activities Association passed a rule Wednesday that clears the way for homeschool students to participate in interscholastic activities for the first time.

Under the new rule homeschool students will have to meet eligibility requirements. The requirements include a student who leaves public school for homeschool to sit out of interscholastic activities for one year and homeschool students could only play for a school in a district where their parents live.

The governing body of the AAA which is comprised of superintendents and athletic directors, approved the rule change 155-82. It required a majority vote to pass.

Shawn Cook, superintendent of Lakeside School District in Hot Springs, spoke out against the rule saying it puts public school students at a disadvantage.

"When our kids get home from an event they'll have to be at school the next morning at 8 o'clock," Cook says.  "Home school kids can sleep in, practice all day, do whatever they want to do."

The rule change approval comes after the failure of "Tim Tebow Law" at the general assembly in 2009 and 2011 which would have allowed homeschool students to participate in sports as well as band, choir and other extracurricular activities.

TonyThom; yes, I complain. About taxes, the government, thugs killing people and the DA's and judges letting them off easy. I also enjoy making light of stories such as "tapping" and other such nonsense. I also pray for some of the victims in these stories. And I enjoy offering my opinion on things; it's a new hobby for me. That's what this comment section on Fox is for, isn't it? And there are some very interesting people on here. There are some that are very intelligent; such as golfdude, itsjustme, Butch, and others. We don't always agree on things, but that's part of playing the game. And one other thing; I really enjoy reading ( or trying to read ) some of the others comments. We have comments from people at both ends of the IQ classifications. The crackheads comments are really fun to read! Relax and enjoy.

lk1960 - - don't take it too hard. It's the same 5 or 6 people that comment on every story here. All they do is complain...about everything. Keep on keeping on.

What exactly is the beef people have with allowing ALL students to participate? It's about the kids, isn't it? People choose homeschooling for more reasons than you can count, & contrary to what most on here seem to believe, it's usually NOT because they don't like the school. There are special learning needs, disabilities, bullying issues, you name it, all kinds of issues that cause parents to make this decision. And frankly, if you think about it, it is a WIN WIN for everyone, since every child that homeschools is one less child that puts a stress on an already overburdened public school infrastructure. So again I ask, why the backlash against those who make this very tough choice to homeschool? Maybe it's just a lack of understanding, I don't know. But what I do know is this, its about the kids & what is best for them, & ALL of them deserve an equal opportunity and equal access! This can be a WIN WIN for everyone folks, if it's done right!!

softballmom; Not "scared" of much; have a righteous fear of the Lord as the Word of God instructs me, and a 4th heart attack. On this particular subject; I'm going down to the Revenue Office here shortly to pay for tag renewal on my 2 vehicles. $3.75 for the F-250 ( veterans plates ), and $9.50 for the Harley. As for property taxes, I'm disabled, and the credit I get covers my home and the acre I own; so I guess I don't pay for your kids or anyone elses anymore. Praise the Lord! And actually, I really don't care one way or the other on this subject; just had an opinion on homeschooled playing organized school sports. Have to agree with wp though; probably going to be some bias and tension; but that's you and your children's problem, not mine.

Don't have kids. I've been paying property taxes for years to support the local schools; something I do not benefit from in the least; especially considering the quality of education in these schools, the quality of the "educated" young adults entering our work force, etc. And now my taxes are going to be supporting pjfive and softballmom's kids to play sports; it is totally unfair for me to have to pay taxes for other people's kids to be "educated" and to play sports, period.

fair enough, if you're forced to pay for something then you should be able to utilize it. I don't think the home schooled player would feel much like a part of the team though, would probably cause some tension. Coaches may be a little biased too. But I don't think that there are that many home schooled kids out there for it to matter much.

pjfive & softballmom, you are right, the parents do in fact pay the same taxes for schools. BUT, they also choose on their own free will to home school their kids. So dont talk about fairness, they chose that when they chose to home school, no ones forcing them to home school.

Homeschool parents pay the same taxes to the school district that everyone else does, and get nothing in return. So now our kids get to compete against yours for positions on a team. Sounds pretty fair to me. They will practice just the same except they do their studies at home. It's about time the AAA does something right. Sounds like bat102 and ArkansasYankee might be scared their kid would have a little competition.

Homeschool parents who own property in the district pay taxes to the school district and normally don't get anything in return. This ruling would provide some benefit to the homeschooled children; and if the children are talented in the activity in which they choose to participate, the school could also benefit. There are homeschool leagues, but they usually require a lot of long distance traveling.

I'm with you bat; if they don't like our schools ( can't say I blame them though ), then let them start their own league. And this is AR; the good ol' boys network is always on the lookout for an under the table handout; from the highest office to the lowest, and everywhere in between.
