MENA, Ark. (AP) — As the drought intensifies in the region, the Ouachita and St. Francis national forests in Arkansas and Oklahoma have banned backcountry campfires.
Officials say people at developed campgrounds can still use wood or charcoal in grills and established fire rings. But out in the forests, campers can only use natural gas lanterns, grills and stoves.
Similar fire restrictions are also in place at the Buffalo National River recreation area in north Arkansas.
All of Arkansas is categorized as being at high risk of wildfires. Much of Oklahoma is experiencing various levels of drought.
