North Little Rock student hit by car while walking to bus stop

I can understand how driving can be one's "thing". But as we are all human, and we all age, there are things we must give up for safety's sake; the safety of others as well as ourselves. Case in point. Followed my Dad and step mother to Dallas in the not too distant past when they moved there. Dad can't see to drive any longer, so my step mother drove. Between here and the big D, she must have drifted over the white line on the right 3 dozen times. She drifted into the other lane on the Interstate about the same amount of times. Almost hit a car on one occasion. There is a point when one has to give up certain things due to age. The very young drivers and the very old one's are the ones that scare me the most when I'm on the Harley.

I am 74 and driving is "my thing"...been travelling all my life and not planning to stop for a while yet....HOWEVER, I bet this lady loses her right to drive because of her age. Whether she should drive or not I dont know, but I hate to see it. Very glad the girl wasn't hurt badly..

Good one wp! Mikerthebiker is absolutely correct. And what does the color of the child have to do with it. She was on her way to school; much different than the "tough" guys walking in the middle of the street when there is a sidewalk right next to them. And we've all seen them, and they come in all colors. "no light can enter". Gotta love that one!

@Foxy, it doesn't matter what color the child was or weather or not she was in the middle of the road, ALL pedestrians have the right of way....just saying!!!!!

Psyclepath, I guess you're just perfect aren't you?? I bet the sun never gets in your eyes b/c you are so closed minded that no light can enter...Ever think that the driver DID slow down and that's why the kid wasn't hurt that bad????? Get off your soap box.

The kid was probably walking right out in the road! I have driven in that area many times, and the youth in that neighborhood walk right in the middle of the road...expecting traffic to stop for them, when clearly they are IN THE ROAD! Bet I know what color this student was....just saying!

I hope the young girl fully recovers. Yep, most of us that have been driving for some time have experienced the old sunball in our eyes thing. I use the old visor in the truck, wear a ball cap or hat with a visor on it all the time, and have some sunglasses on the dash. The combination of all three allow me to get by pretty good when the sun is in my eyes. Of course those of us that took drivers ed were taught to slow down in certain driving conditions. And as speely mentioned, most of us have been in blinding rain; rain coming down so hard the wipers can't keep up with it. Turn on the old lights, pray everyone else does likewise, and slow down. I've been in storms where I've had to pull off the road because I couldn't see well enough to keep driving. Same with dust storms out West; but that's not a problem here. I guess the main thing to remember is what we learned in drivers ed; certain conditions require changing our driving habits and patterns.

Yes you can help slowing your vehicle when you can't see in front of you. It ought to come naturally to any driver who's paying attention to what's on the road and what may be ahead on the road. You simply don't press ahead bravely and boldly whenever visibility is limited just because you "know this road", and I don't care who's driving behind me and slightly put out about me slowing down. If I can't see what's in front of me in glaringly bright sunshine or pouring rain, I'm slowing down.

@pscyclepath...sometimes you can't help it when driving. Yes I agree with you regarding slowing down and taking precautions but you can't always avoid driving. @wpsark... I have been there too and I will slow down and take precautions but it sure is scary when you can't see the light or anything else for that matter. I pray this young girl recovers soon and pray that her injuries are not serious

When you are blinded by the sun like that, your responsibility is to SLOW DOWN. If you can't see, don't drive, or take special precautions. We were (hopefully) lucky this time.
