Officer-involved shooting in Alexander

Police say an officer shot man in the middle of Brookwood Road Saturday afternoon.
ALEXANDER, AR - Police say an officer shot man in the middle of Brookwood Road Saturday afternoon.

Alexander police, Saline County deputies, Shannon Hills police and state police all responded to the shooting around 5:30pm, Saturday.

Alexander Police Chief Horace Walters says this is the first officer-involved shooting in his three years with the department.

"It's always a shock when an officer has to discharge his weapon," he said. "I've been in law enforcement for 35 years and it's never the same. You always feel tragedy for both the suspect as well as the officer."

The female officer is on paid administrative leave while state police investigate.
The officer joined the force in January.

The male suspect was taken to the hospital but State Police will not release his condition.

Police say the suspect threw a weapon into the woods before the shooting.

There are only six officers on the force in Alexander including the chief.
