One Million Meals Campaign Working Toward Holiday Season

LITTLE ROCK, AR -- We're getting closer to the holiday season. It's a time of year highlighted by big meals with family.

One local company is teaming up with the Arkansas Foodbank to make sure more families across the central Arkansas get to enjoy those holiday feasts.

"Having a holiday meal with your family is something that everyone should have the opportunity to do," Leighanne Alford said of the mission Arkansas Foodbank tries to make a reality.  "The holiday time is really busy."

This fall, the charity has the help of another bank, one that usually collects more money than food.

"We think it's very important for our community, so we take it as an initiative and take it very seriously," said John Womack, chairman of Arvest Bank's central Arkansas region.

Collecting nonperishable foods and money, his company has already pulled in more than 600,000 meals since Sept. 4.

"This initiative comes at a perfect time of year because you've got Thanksgiving and Christmas on each other's heels," he said.

It's all part of Arvest's One Million Meals campaign aimed at fighting hunger in four states where the company has branches.

In central Arkansas, Arvest is teaming up with the Arkansas Foodbank, and the charity will help distribute goods local Arvest branches collect at church food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and low-cost daycare centers.

It's a partnership perfect for this time of year.

As each new stack of food comes in, it's another meal for a central Arkansas family over the holiday season.
