Personhood group to file 3rd amendment

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Holly Austin is leading the local effort of Personhood Arkansas, the group that wants voters to decide whether abortions are illegal.

Since December, Pro-life activists have been rallying for a Personhood amendment on November's ballot. At a January March, supporters reminded state leaders why they believe in the right to life.

"Giving someone life and allowing them to be born is the most unselfish gift anyone can give another person," said Austin.

The group already submitted two proposed amendments and both were rejected. In an opinion, the Attorney General's office called the language too ambiguous. In the latest petition, Personhood Arkansas is focusing on the word "innocent" to hopefully clear up any confusion.

"An innocent person is one that has not been born, has not committed a crime, and someone that is not due the punishment of death," said Austin.

Austin hopes the third version will pass and go to voters this fall. But like any hot button issue, there are at least two sides.

Fox 16 News spoke with the President of the National Organization for Women.

"A woman has the fundamental right to have an abortion and to have access to the entire range of reproductive services; that's abortion, birth control, and prenatal care," said NOW leader Terry O'Neill.
